One “Palace” car was engulfed by rioters near the foot of Canal Street. The top view faces the river, with the ferry ramp at the left. The rioters appear to be attempting to overturn the streetcar. It stayed on its wheels, but then they set it on fire. The middle and bottom photos, probably taken the next day, document the result. The little utility shed in these pictures suffered some damage, also. Ultimately, two men were killed on this day, and many more were injured by thrown paving stones. — Underwood & Underwood/CORBIS (top picture); photos by John Tibula Mendes, courtesy The Historic New Orleans Collection 2003.0182.517 and 2003.0182.518 (middle and bottom pictures)
