Undergraduate Student Groups

ACM

1104 SC
(217)333-5828

The Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery is currently the largest in the country and perhaps the oldest (1965). ACM at Illinois is one of about 430 student chapters, with close to 500 members. Special interest groups (SIGs) focus on fifteen different areas such as computer graphics, mobile computing and artificial intelligence. Besides the SIGs, the group holds many social events, a yearly midwest conference, tutoring sessions and a place to hang out and relax.

Women in Computer Science (WCS)

1318 SC
women@cs.uiuc.edu

Women in Computer Science provide support and social interaction for department staff and students, visiting students, new students and faculty. The group provides a mentoring program, social gatherings, and professional workshops and speakers.

The Latino/a Computer Science Club (LCSC)

The Latino/a Computer Science Club became a registered student organization in the spring of 2007. The club was developed with the main goal of creating a special community within the department, one in which Latino students can not only meet each other, but also help each other be successful. Another main goal of the club involves creating outreach programs and recruiting more Latino students into the studies of computer science. In its first semester of existence, LCS hosted an array of social events incuding an XBOX night, live showings of soccer games on the big screens at Siebel, and a traditional Mexican Fiesta. The group is looking to increase its numbers significantly in the coming semesters.

!BANG

1320 SC
bang@cs.uiuc.edu

!BANG works to provide social opportunities for computer science students and to help improve the entire CS experience. Social events include the fall !mixer where incoming freshmen are welcomed to the department, and !studybreak for a time to relax right before finals. !BANG also maintains the !courseguide, which includes peer-given reviews of instructors and courses in computer science.

CSSAC

cssac@cs.uiuc.edu

The Student Advisory Council represents the concerns of the student population, advises and helps in the administration of the department, and promotes better relations between students, faculty, and staff. The council is comprised of liaison members from all CS registered student organizations and three representatives from the student body at large (one from each level - undergrad I and II, and grad). The council meets during fall and spring semesters. Applications are accepted each Fall semester. Please contact Steve Herzog for more information.

PowerLunch

The PowerLunch program provides an occasion for CS undergrads to meet with faculty members in an informal setting. Students can become better acquainted with professors, ask advice on graduate schools, and learn more about research opportunities. Contact Holly Bagwell if you are interested.
