Games 4 Girls Competition (G4G)

2008 Winners Announced!!

First Place: Skip Tracer from University of Arizona

Second Place: Snogard 2 from Ohio State University

Third Place Tie: Extreme Girls from William Smith and Daruka from Cornell University

Honorable Mention:Self defense and You from University of Michigan

The Competition?

In the Games 4 Girls Competition, teams of up to five college women create computer games specifically designed to be fun for middle or high school age women. The entries are judged by high school girls. Award for the winning team is $1000 per team member; for the second and third place teams $500 per team member.

The Platform

You do not have to be an experienced programmer to participate in the competition. For teams without prior experience in making games, we recommend the Game Maker platform. Game Maker is a freely available, PC-based game development tool. Game Maker's drag and drop gaming primitives and friendly interface allow novice designers to create interesting games almost immediately. For more advanced users, Game Maker's built-in programming language provides flexibility and customization. Development on Game Maker is supported by online documentation, tutorials, and lots of game examples.

By creating a great game, you can

• Get real-world, collaborative experience in software game development!
• Provide new software toys for girl gamers!
• Work with your friends on a fun creative project!

What Makes a Good Game?

Four components make up a good game:

• Fun,
• Playability,
• Creativity, and
• Technical Achievement

These will all be judged by high school aged women.

Getting Started

Below are the basic steps. Click here for more details.

1. Form a group.
2. Dream up your game.
3. Find Faculty Advisor.
4. Submit your registration for G4G by filling out the online registration form by January 31, 2008.
5. Download Game Maker from http://www.gamemaker.nl/download.html and start your project! (If the full version of Game Maker is required for your project, contact us for a registration key.)

There are NO restrictions on the kind of game/video you create!
