Mark Gates

I’m a Ph.D. student in computer science, studying scientific computing amidst the corn and soy at the University of Illinois. My research is in digital volume correlation, with my advisor Michael Heath and co-advisor John Lambros. See my research page for more information. My math genealogy (svg) is available, courtesy of David Alber’s geneagrapher program, In past lives, I’ve worked at InterVarsity Press, NCSA, and Lawrence Livermore National Lab.

In my “copious free time,” I enjoy reading, hiking, wood working, road and mountain biking, baking, programming (as if research wasn’t enough), and playing with Legos. Why do they put an upper age limit on Legos boxes? I still enjoy them, and am definitely out of the “ages 6–12” range. While I’ve lived 92% of my life in flat Illinois, I yearn for mountains. Above is a picture of me and my dad at Stanley Canyon, in front of the ice water fall. Maybe someday I’ll achieve moving to the mountains, instead of just visiting. I’m not much of an artist, but I doodled in some early classes.

The best way to get ahold of me is via email <mrgates2 @ uiuc.edu>. If you need more contact info, try ph. You can also find me on Facebook.
