Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, 7th edition, by Boyce and Diprima

This course will focus on the mathematical techniques of solving first and second order differential equations. Higher order linear equations and Laplace Transformation may also be considered. Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) are widely used in the modeling of phenoma found in economics, biology, physics, etc. A course in differential equations in considered a "classical" course in Applied Mathematics and helps build a foundation for further investigation in the sciences.

Numerical methods for solving ODE will be briefly considered in this course, although students will find more of this in the second semester along with nonlinear problems and stability, linear algebra and systems of equations, and partial differential equations.

Goals, in summary:

• to build an understanding of the nature of ODEs
• to introduce the basic methods in solving differential equations
• to motivate the connection between differential equations and many many applications

There will be two midterm exams and one final exam. Go here for more details. There will be no make-up exams.

There will be approximately 10-12 homework assignments given on weekly intervals throughout the semester. The homework will be graded and the lowest score will be dropped. Late homework will not be accepted unless a valid excuse is given at least one day prior to the due date. Assignments are listed here.

The underlying purpose of the homework is to help develop an intuition for ODEs and an understanding of the various solution methods. The homework is important. Please consult with other students, TAs, and instructors when needing help studying the various techniques.

Plagarism, copying, etc. is unacceptable and will be handled accordingly. Solution manuals are available and should be used for assitance, not for direct copying. Verbatim solution approaches will be investigated. Note: Some solution steps are incorrect, so be careful!

In summary, spend time doing the homework carefully. This is one of the best ways to prepare for exams.
