Communication Protocol
Questions, Comments, and Requests
- For any questions or
clarification of class material, please ask them on the newsgroup
whenever possible. We encourage everyone in the class to help answer the
questions. If satisfactory answers do not emerge, our TAs will answer or
forward the questions to the instructor.
- For any comments or
requests, please email a TA first. The TA will forward to the
instructor if he cannot answer your questions or your requests.
Newsgroup
- Announcements will be posted
to the newsgroup and our Web site. Make sure to check the newsgroup
frequently enough to stay informed.
- Use the class newsgroup for
your questions. As everyone can see them, it is more likely to get quick
response.
- You are encouraged to answer or
participate in the discussions for questions posted on the newsgroup.
- However, there are obviously
things that are not appropriate for the newsgroup, such as solutions for
assignments as well as comments or requests to the staff.
- The TAs will respond to the
newsgroup posts within 48 hours of the post. If there is a post that has
been sitting without a TA response for more than 72 hrs, please email your
TA about the post.
Emails
- Please use the newsgroup, not
emails, for general questions, unless you wish to keep your questions or
comments private.
- Please email your TA first,
who will then forward your requests to the instructor if necessary.
- Please use a specific subject
line starting with "CS412:", e.g., " CS412: Midterm
Preparation".
- TAs would response to emails
within 48 hrs except in exceptional cases.
Phone
- Please avoid using the phone
unless 1) during the office hours or 2) absolutely necessary.
Class Attendance
- Students are expected to
attend and participate in all class meetings.
Examinations
- Make-up exams will not be
given except in fully documented cases of medical or other
emergencies. Please make sure that you can attend all the exams
Late Submissions
- All scheduled due dates/times
are IOC time (US Central Time).
- Due date/time will be
strictly enforced. The staff will collect the submissions some time
after they are due-- no work will be accepted after this
collection. In other words, please do not take chance to submit late work.
- Missing work gets zero
credit. If you are unable to complete an assignment due to illness
or family emergency, we will understand but please see the instructor as
soon as possible to make special arrangements. All such exceptional cases
must be fully documented.
Regrading
- All requests to change
grading of any course work must be submitted in writing within three
days of when the grades are made available. Requests must be specific
and explain why you feel your work deserves additional credit. Do not ask
for a regrade until you have studied and understood our sample solution.
- All requests about missing
(or zero) grades must be submitted in writing to the appropriate TA within
three days of when the grades are announced.
Academic Integrity
- All course work that you
submit must be efforts of your own (if it is an individual assignment) or
of your approved team (if it is a group assignment).
<li</li Discussions on
readings and assignments are strongly encouraged. However, such collaboration
should be limited to general strategies and ideas, but not specific solutions.
As a general rule, your submitted work should represent identifiable efforts
and originality of you or your approved team.
- Plagiarism is a violation
of this academic integrity policy.
- Violation of the integrity
policy will result in a fail grade of the class.
