CS412: Intro to Data Mining (Fall 2007)
Course Project
Due date and time: Dec 7 (Friday) 11:59pm
Submission Requirements:
Background:
A Wiki is a web site where members of a community can add and modify content, usually without centralized editorial control. Wikis have been very successful in building large knowledge repositories through mass collaboration. The best known Wiki site is probably Wikipedia. You should look at this site, especially at scientific articles, to get a feeling for what a good Wiki entry should look like.
The Data Mining Wiki:
This is the second semester that we work on a Data Mining Wiki. The purpose of the project is to create an online encyclopedia covering Data Mining topics. This will be a long term project, in which every semester new topics will be covered, and existing topics will be expanded.
As founding contributors to the project your articles will be essential to the long term success of the DMWiki. Your articles will give visibility to the project, and will likely be used as templates for deep technical content and clear writing by future contributors.
Article Style:
The writing style should be more similar to that found in a textbook than the one found in a conference or journal paper. We encourage authors to use interactive content such as animations to better explain algorithms and data structures; you should also make extensive use of links to reference sources and related work, as it will help readers wanting to explore a topic at a deeper level.
Adding content (short tutorial):
In order to add entries to the DMWiki you should follow these steps:
1. Get yourself familiar with the wiki authoring language and tools. This language is not html, but the Confluence wiki language. The language is easy to learn and the best way to get an idea of its syntax is just to look at the source of example pages, and read the language description.
· Information on the wiki language syntax is found here.
· A short authoring guide is found here.
· An example entry for the DMWiki is found here.
· Lots of example pages can be seen at the UIUC Computer Science Agora pages.
You should first create a few pages of your own, and play with the editor, and the language until you feel comfortable enough to start adding content to the DMWiki.
2. In addition to emailing to Sang (kim71 at uiuc dot edu), go to the Topics page and select the topic(s) that you would like to author by adding your name in the Author column. Topics will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. If you would like to add a new topic or make changes to the current topic list, please add this to the end of the page under “Suggested changes to the topics”.
3. For each topic you selected create a new page.
3.1 Click on Add Page
3.2 Select the title for your page
3.3 If you want to use our template, click on “Select a page template” to start form, and choose the template named “Entry”.
3.4 Modify the template as necessary, or create your page from scratch.
3.5 When you are satisfied with your page, go to the Topics page and create a link from the topic entry to your page. The link has the format [Link Name | PageTitle].
