I am currently a Beckman fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and will join the computer science faculty there starting January 2009. My dissertation (with Alexei Efros and Martial Hebert) was on recovering a 3D spatial layout from a single image. This spatial layout can then serve as one of the key components of scene understanding, providing surface and depth estimates for navigation, boundaries for segmentation, and a geometric context for recognition and other tasks. Beyond that, my primary interest is in how we can effectively leverage the large number of supervised and unsupervised datasets to understand images.
