Detecting Critical Power Lines with MINLP
In August 2003, three downed power lines caused a cascading series of outages that resulted in over fifty million people losing power across the Northeastern United States and Southeastern Canada. In addition to causing an estimated six billion dollars in lost revenue, this blackout highlighted a major weakness in our ability build robust power grids. doing the same for any pair, triplet, or larger set of failures is not using current techniques. Mixed integer, nonlinar programming (MINLP) offers us the ability to overcome this problem without simplifying the mathematics of the underlying physical models.
