M.S. with Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) Option

The Master of Science with specialization in Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) is an interdisciplinary program focused on computationally oriented research. All M.S. degree requirements apply with the distribution requirement modified as follows:

  1. One course from the Software list and one course from either the Architecture or Theory lists is required as noted on the M.S. Distribution Coursework page.
  2. One numerical analysis course must be taken from the following list:
    • CS 450 Intro to Numerical Analysis
    • CS 455 Numerical Methods for PDEs>
    • CS 458 Numerical Linear Algebra
    • CS 459 Numerical Approximation and ODEs

M.C.S./Bachelor of Science in Accountancy

The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Accountancy offer a complementary five-year program allowing students to earn a B.S. in Accountancy followed by a M.C.S.. Computer science undergraduates who are interested in a MAS should consult the Department of Accountancy.

To be eligible for the joint program, accountancy undergraduates must have an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher, with at least a 3.0 in non-remedial math and computer science courses, and must score at least 1250/1600 on the GRE Verbal, Quantitative tests and 5.0/6.0 on the Analytical writing exam.

Students should apply to the M.C.S. program at the end of the semester in which they complete 75 credit hours. Undergraduate coursework, by the way of preparation for the M.C.S., should include calculus courses Math 220, 230, 242, and 225, and CS 125, CS 173, CS 225, CS 231 and CS 273. In addition, up to 12 credit hours of 400-level coursework required for the M.C.S. may be taken while an undergraduate and be counted towards both the B.S. and the M.C.S.. The remaining credit hours for the M.C.S. are completed in the fifth year of study.

M.C.S./Master of Architecture

The Department of Computer Science and the School of Architecture offer a joint program leading to the degrees of M.C.S. and Master of Architecture (MArch).

Students must meet the admission standards of both departments and must complete both degrees for a total of 74 credit hours (the MArch is 38 credit hours).

M.C.S./J.D.

The Department of Computer Science and the College of Law offer a joint program leading to the degrees of M.C.S. and Juris Doctor (J.D.). The program is intended principally for law students who plan to specialize in an area of law in which expertise in computer science would be a clear asset, such as: intellectual property law, legal issues surrounding the Internet, and business law as it relates to technology companies (e.g., structuring IPOs for technology companies).

Students will select a major area of emphasis within computer science that complements their chosen area of legal emphasis. A coherent, focused plan of study that draws upon related coursework in both law and computer science must be approved. Students must meet the admission standards of both degree programs. The minimum requirements for the joint program are:

  1. 90 credit hours of law coursework (12 credit hours may be computer science or other scientific coursework leading to the M.C.S. degree).
  2. 36 credit hours of coursework for the M.C.S. degree (at least 12 credit hours must be law coursework relating to legal protections for intellectual property or in related business law fields). At least 6 credit hours must be from approved law courses. Please consult the College of Law for this list, which may be modified as appropriate.

Ph.D. with Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) Option

The Ph.D. with specialization in Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) is an interdisciplinary program which focuses on computationally oriented research. All Ph.D. degree requirements apply PLUS the following additional requirements:

  1. Students must take 12 credit hours of coursework relevant to their CSE research areas, selected with the approval of their advisor, from one or more departments outside computer science.
  2. CSE 500-level courses may be used to satisfy the advanced coursework (500-level) requirement.
  3. The Ph.D. thesis must deal with some aspect of CSE.
  4. The doctoral committee should include a faculty member from outside computer science whose interests are relevant to the student's research.

Ph.D./MD

The department participates in the Medical Scholars Program, enabling highly qualified students to pursue both an MD in medicine and a doctorate in CS. Applicants to the program must be US citizens or permanent residents. Apply online and use the Medical Scholars program application.

The key elements for participation are a commitment to excellence and a scholarly career, and professional plans that will be facilitated by earning both degrees. Examples of areas in which this training might be applied include expert systems for physicians and health care professionals, hospital information systems, system reliability, and bioengineering applications.
