CS231 Spring 2008 Announcements


May 14

Grades in CS231 are assigned according to a curve. The distribution used has been close to the one specified in the syllabus: "The distribution of final grades will be approximately 30% As, 35% Bs, 30% Cs, and 5% others".

You can compute your grade as: (Average of HWs) *0.3 + (Average of Midterms)*0.38+(Average of quizzes)*0.05+Final*0.27

Grades have been assigned as follows:

> 85 --> A

between 78 and 84 --> B

between 70 and 78 --> C

below 70 Others

May 11

Final Exam grades have been entered into Mallard.  The average was 64, with a high of 99 and a low of 33.  Have a good summer!

The Final Exam will be held on Tuesday, May 6, from 8:00am to 11:00am in 1404 SC.  It will be cumulative, but with more emphasis on the post-Midterm2 material.

April 30

Office hours will be held both on Thursday and Friday of this week.  Office hours on Thursday, however, will now be from 4:00 to 5:30.  There will be no office hours next week.

Homework 10-2 is now available on the assignments page. It is due at 5:00pm on Wednesday, April 30.  It is a substantial LogicWorks problem that is worth twice that of a normal homework.

April 15

There have been some requests for students to learn their current grades.  Grades for CS 231 are calculated on a curve.  You can calculate your current standing in the following way:

Current_Grade = (Average of HWs 1-7)*0.30 + (Average of Midterms 1 and 2)*0.38 + (Average of Quizzes 0-18)*0.05

This grade can be no higher than a 0.73 at this point (please see syllabus for details on grading).  As of right now, the grades are as follows:
66 and above  => A
66 - 62           => B
62 - 54           => C
Below 54        => Other

April 14

Midterm2 grades are in Mallard.  You may pick them up during TA office hours.  The class average was 86.3%

Homework9 is now available on the assignments page. It is due at 5:00pm on Monday, April 21.

Homework 8: Only problems 1, 2 and 3 are due on Monday April 14th. Since we did not finish with the material in the Datapath Lecture, Problems 4 and 5 will be due on Monday April 21st.

Midterm 2 will be held tonight, Monday, April 7, 2008 @ 7:00pm in 151 EVRT.  Bring a photo ID.

PowerPoints with example problems on Sequential Circuit Analysis and Design have been posted on the Lecture Page under March 14. The solutions to all the problems will be posted soon.

Homework8 is now available on the assignments page. It is due at 5:00pm on Monday, April 14.

Mar 30

Midterm 2 will be held in approximately one week on Monday, April 7, 2008 @ 7:00pm in 151 EVRT.  If you are in need of a conflict exam, please email ta231 at cs.uiuc.edu by this Friday, April 4.  You must include a valid, verifiable excuse.  Conflicts will be granted on a case by case basis.

Midterm2 will cover everything from the "ALU" lecture on Feb 25 through and including "Dynamic Memory, ROMs, and PLAs" on Apr 2.  Familiarity with pre-Midterm1 material is assumed.

Homework6, Question 2 has been corrected.
You're asked to use a D flip-flop to implement a JK and T flip-flop. (not to use a JK or T flip-flop to implement a D flip-flop)

Grades for CS 231 are calculated on a curve.  You can calculate your current standing in the following way:

This is only an estimation to help you know where you currently stand in the class.  There are still many more homeworks, quizzes, and 2 exams.  Grades and cutoffs will change significantly.  There will also be pluses and minuses on the final grades around cutoff points.

There will be a review session this Friday, February 29.  The exam will be discussed and we will work through the problems and any questions you may have.

So that you will be able to have the solutions to HW4 to help you study for Midterm1, we will not accept solutions that are more than 1 day late.  Solutions for HW4 will be posted on Tuesday, February 26, at 5:00pm.

Feb 21

Midterm 1 will be held on Wednesday, February 27, from 7:00 to 9:00pm.  It will be held  in 2 different classrooms.  It is your responsibility to report to the appropriate classroom.  You must also bring your ID.

     Students whose NetIDs begin with A-L will take the midterm in DCL 1310.

     Students whose NetIDs beging with M-Z will take the midterm in MSEB 119.

Please note that HW3 contains one LogicWorks Problem.  A tutorial will be given this Friday during the review session on using the LogicWorks software.  Additional information on using LogicWorks can be found by following the link on the left-hand navigation bar.
