Lab 5: Inside a Computer, and Blogging
This week, we will be opening up a computer, and taking a look at the parts inside, including the processor,
memory, etc. We will also start blogging.
By the end of this lab, you should:
- Have taken apart a computer, and be able to identify the motherboard, memory, hard drive, processor,
sound and graphic cards.
- Have looked up three blogging services, and picked one to start a blog on.
Lab Tasks:
- Take apart your computer!
- Identify the CPU, memory, hard drive and CD-ROM drive, sound/network/graphics cards. What connects
the hard drive to the rest of the system? Can you connect more than one hard drive to your computer?
- Pick 2 of your interests, and find 3 blogs that discuss each of them.
- Visit each of Blogger (Take a Quick Tour),
Wordpress (Learn more about what sets us apart) and
LiveJournal (About LJ, at the bottom of the page).
- Compare the three services (you could look at their features, or even sign up for an account on each).
Pick your favourite; you'll be blogging there for the rest of the semester.
- Write a first post on your blog. Among other things, explain what made you pick that service.
- Write another short entry on the 2 interests that you picked, and include links to the 6 blogs you
found on those subjects.
- At Home: There will be regular blogging assignments through the course of the semester.
(Feel free to move to another service if you prefer that to the one you picked in the lab session.)
Write a post based on your thoughts about CS199 so far.
- Also At Home: Read the articles we will post on blog culture.
