Announcements:
- Dec 9: You can download the 3-page cheat sheet that will appear at the end of the final exam.
- Dec 8:
- The final exam is Monday, December 10, from 1:30 to 4:30.
- If you took your midterms in Siebel 1404, your final exam is in Siebel 1404.
- If you took your midterms in DCL 1320, your final exam is in Animal Sciences Lab 150 (just southwest of the undergrad library and Morrow Plots)
- If you have not already received email from Jeff about the time and place of the conflict exam, we think you're taking the regular exam.
- There is a review session in 1320 DCL this afternoon from 4pm to 6pm.
- Cinda's practice final (which was distributed in iscussoin sections last week) and its solutions are now available.
- Solutions and rubrics for Homework 11 and Homework 12 are now available.
- Dec 7: Everyone will get full credit for problems 1(j) and 4(b) on Homework 12, even if you do not turn in a solution. Problem 1(j) requires tools that we haven't taught you, but if you can figure them out yourself, you can still turn in a solution for extra credit. Problem 4(b) is just wrong; the set {1,4,7} is not reasonable. Sorry for the confusion!
- Nov 30:
- Homework 12 (Homework 12) is due Friday, December 7, at 5pm.
- The final exam will take place Monday, December 10, 1:30-4:20. If you have another final exam at that time, or if this is one of three final exams in a 24-hour period, you may take the conflict exam instead. If you need to take a conflict exam, please send Jeff email as soon as possible. The time of the conflict exam will depend on the schedules of the students who need to take it, but we are tentatively planning to hold it Tuesday, December 11, 1:30-4:30.
- Nov 29: Solutions and rubrics for Midterm 2 are available. The exam papers themselves will be returned in discussion sections this week.
- Nov 19: Grades for Midterm 2 are now available on Compass. The actual exam papers will be returned in discussion sections next week. Here are some statistics:

(We're changing the due date so that you don't have homework due during Thanksgiving break.) This homework will be graded by the TAs rather than the seciton leaders, but you should still submit by email to your section leaders as usual.
- Nov 7: Solutions for Midterm 2 are available.
- Nov 5:
- Homework 9 solutions and Homework 10 solutions are available.
- The cheat sheet that will appear at the end of Midterm 2 is available.
- Jeff is holding extra office hours this afternoon from 4pm to 5pm.
- Nov 4: Fernanda, Yuzi, and Nikhil will give an exam review Monday, 11/5, 8-10p, in 103 Transportation Building.
- Oct 31: Information regarding Midterm #2 has been posted. If you have an academic conflict with the exam time, e-mail Jeff at jeffe@cs.uiuc.edu as soon as possible.
- Oct 30: Homework 10 (tex) is due Sunday, November 4 at 11:59pm. Also, Homework 9 has been revised -- you don't need to use induction in problem 4.
- Oct 26: We are giving everyone a one-week extension on the current homework; Homework 9 is now due Sunday, November 4, at 11:59pm. This does not mean that you should wait another week to start working on it!
Homework 10, which will be released early next week as usual, will also be due November 4, but it will be shorter (and easier) than usual.
- Oct 23: The section handout for this week's section has been posted along with all previous section handouts.
- Oct 22: Homework 9 (tex) is due Sunday,
October 28November 4 at 11:59pm.- Oct 21: The handouts on relations and functions and types of binary relations have been slightly revised, to include some most examples of composition and to eliminate a few bugs.
- Oct 15: Homework 8 (tex) is due Sunday, October 21 at 11:59pm.
- Oct 14: Homework #7 is due Monday, October 15 at 11:59pm. We made a mistake with the PDF stating homework #7 was due on Oct. 14 while the website stated it was due Oct. 15. Enjoy the extra day.
- Oct 12: Problem 3(a), parts i and ii, are impossible. Every one-to-one function from {1,2,3} to {a,b,c} is onto, and every onto function from {1,2,3} to {a,b,c} is one-to-one. In fact, this is true for any finite domain and codomain that have the same number of elements. Everybody will get credit for those two problems. Sorry for the mistake.
- Oct 9: Now that multiple-choice grades have been entered, all grades for Midterm 1 are now available on Compass. The exam papers will be returned in discussion sections. Here are some statistics:
# 1-8 9 10 11 12 13 overall average 28.4 7.5 6.4 6.7 4.1 8.9 62.2 std dev 8.8 3.7 3.1 3.1 3.0 5.7 19.8 10% 25% 50% 30 10 7 7 3 8 62 75% 90% - Oct 8:
- Homework 7 is due October 15.
- Except for the multiple choice questions, Midterm 1 has been graded. Grades are available on Compass. The exam papers will be returned in discussion sections. Updated solutions, with grading rubrics and explanations for the multiple choice questions, are available.
- Oct 5: Homework 6 has been revised. In problem 4, sets A and B are not subsets of U. Sorry for the confusion.
- Oct 3: Solutions to Midterm 1 are available.

- Section signup is now open on Compass. Under cs173, Fall 2007, you'll find a link to the cs173 section signup page. Please choose exactly one section from the list. You are only allowed to sign up once, so be as sure as you can of your choice. Make sure to write down the email address of your section leader while you are there since you'll be submitting a homework BEFORE your first section meeting. Email Cinda at heeren@cs.uiuc.edu if you have any problems. In particular, if you have registered for the course within the last 3-5 days, Compass may not yet recognize you. If that's the case, let Cinda know so she can add you manually.
