Prerequisites:
CS411 (or equivalent) level of database knowledge is required. Proficiency in programming
is necessary for completing the course project.
Reference Textbook:
Readings in Database Systems (4th Ed.) by Michael Stonebraker and Joe Hellerstein, Morgan Kaufmann. This book is a collection of database papers, which many of our readings will be drawn from. We recommend that students have this book handy, although the papers should also be available from other online sources. -- Not required.
Format
The instructor will lecture twice a week, for 75 minutes each.
In each class, we generally cover one major paper possibly with additional reference papers. Before each lecture, you are required to read the assigned papers, and send a brief review of the major paper
to the newsgroup. Given the same amount of time spent on reading, it is much more benefitial to you if you read the paper before the class rather than after the class as you would be able to follow the lecture better and we can use the class time more effectively to focus on the major issues without needing
to explain some technical details that you can easily acquire through reading a paper.
You are only required to write a review for the major papers covered before the midterm, and you may miss up to two reviews without incurring a penalty on your grade. (We do encourage you to write a review for all the papers covered before the midterm except for Graefe's survey on query execution.)
More instructions on how to write and submit such a review can be found here.
You should also attend lectures and participate in discussions. Part of the grade will come from participation.
Grading
Grading will be mainly based on the project work, participation, and presentations,
according to the following weighting scheme.
- Participation (reviews, discussion, attendance): 10%
- Homeworks: 30%
- Midterm exam: 25%
- Project report: 25%
- Project presentation: 10%
